(on getting the call from his local team) “You know what, that’s a dream come true. To be able to go to a school such as Rice and to have a team such as the Houston Texans who are just right down the street, to be interested in this way, this is a dream come true for me. I’m excited to be in this position. I’m excited to be- I’m just so blessed right now, man. I’d like to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ, I’m kind of lost for words right now. I’m just still trying to soak everything in. I’m happy to be a Texan though.”
(on the status of his knee injury) “My injury? I’m full go, ready to go. Yes sir. I’m fully recovered with that. Obviously, I know when I get back to Houston there will be reevaluating my knee but from what I’ve been doing these past couple of weeks in the offseason I’m ready to get the ball rolling.”
(on where he is right now) “I’m back home with my family. I’m actually looking at the crowd right now, I’m back home in Vancouver right now.”
(on his decision to declare early and what he thinks of his decision now) “It was a hard a decision for me. I was blessed to be able to have a good career at Rice, and I was part of a couple teams who were able to do some amazing things at Rice. The decision for me wasn’t an easy one, but with the way that I made my recovery, with my knee, looking back on the injury and this whole process, it was a decision I knew I wouldn’t regret. I made it clear throughout this whole process for me that it didn’t matter if I was going to get drafted first round or seventh round, you know this is the opportunity of a lifetime for me and I’m going to take this opportunity and run with it.”
(on how the Texans have told him he will fit into their 3-4 defense) “They told me that I could fit in right along the defensive line, really. I’m just so excited to be able to go to an organization such as the Texans, they pride themselves on the defensive line. I’m thrilled to be in this situation, I’m thrilled to be able to be chosen by them and I’m thrilled to eventually come back to Houston this upcoming weekend and see what’s in store.”
(on how he feels about playing on a defensive line with J.J. Watt and Vince Wilfork) “Oh, that’s a dream come true, oh my goodness. I’ve been looking up to him, going to Rice, I’ve been growing up in Houston, I went to Houston these past four years and that’s only name you hear, everywhere you go you hear J.J. Watt. To be able to actually have a chance to be able to be on a team with him right now, that in itself is motivation for me to be able to come and perform with my best every day. “
(on if he attended any Texans games during his time at Rice) “I actually, you know what, I actually never went to a Houston Texans game. I’ve never been to a Houston Texans game, so I’m looking forward to preseason.”
(on where he has been during the offseason) “I left Houston. I started training in Arizona. I went back to Houston for pro day, and the only other time I’ve been able to go home is for Easter and then for draft week. I’ve been home just these two times out of this whole offseason. I’m just happy to finally see my family right now, to be amongst them during this whole occasion so I can’t answer anything better than that.”
(on how it feels knowing he is a pro player now just like his CFL Hall of Fame dad) “I’m still at a loss for words with that. He was one of my motivations to be able to take football seriously in my life. He’s been my coach my whole life, he’s been my mentor, he’s been my best friend. To have him here by my side throughout this whole process, from high school all the way until now, I’m proud of this whole situation and I know he’s very proud of me. I’m just at a loss for words. I know he is speechless, too.”
(on Rice Head Coach David Baliff texting him ‘welcome home’) “Yes sir, yes sir, glad to be coming back to Houston.”
(on what he thinks of Rice Coach David Baliff) “Oh man, Coach Baliff, before you even get into the football aspect of him, the first time you meet Coach Baliff, the only thing you have to say about him, the first impression you get of him is what a sincere man he is. The job that he’s done with the Rice football team, it’s been tremendous over these years and over his tenure at Rice. He’s a great coach, he’s a great mentor, he’s a great leader for a team that’s gone through some rough patches and now we’re up and coming with some young guys. He’s a great leader and he’s a father figure to a lot of the guys on the team. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had to pleasure of being coached by.”
(on Rice Coach David Baliff calling him) ”My phone is just blowing up right now. I’m getting text messages. It’s ridiculous. I’ll be sure to give him a call though. Oh my goodness.”
