Houston Texans Transcripts (11/17)

Head Coach Bill O’Brien

HEAD COACH BILL O’BRIEN

Do you feel like WR Bruce Ellington and RB Jordan Todman are the likely candidates to step in for Will Fuller V in the return game?
“We’ve got a few. Braxton (Miller) can do it. Braxton Miller and Chris Thompson can do it. D’Onta Foreman can do it. Talking about kickoff.”

Is WR Chris Thompson a maybe for Sunday?
“He’s probably trending toward playing.”

With all of the injuries, is the NFL showing that it’s becoming too reliant on the quarterback position?
“I mean, it’s an interesting question that will probably take a long, long time to think about. I think that the one thing about the quarterback position, I really believe – obviously I’m biased, but I think it’s the most difficult position to play in sports. I think with all the things that you have to deal with on the field, especially, but also off the field. I mean, I just think it’s a combination of talent, instincts, intelligence, great character. This is hard to do. It’s hard to play that position. I think that once you get to this level, you have 32 starting quarterbacks.  It takes a lot to be a starting quarterback in this league, like a full-time starting quarterback. It’s a very demanding position. There’s some great ones there and then there’s some guys that are striving for greatness, if that makes sense. So, I don’t know. I don’t know the answer to that question. I think that we have, I’ll just say relative to our team, we’ve got a lot of good backs, I feel like we can run the ball, obviously got some good receivers led by Hop (DeAndre Hopkins), tight ends with C.J. (Fiedorowicz) back in there. So, I feel like we got some guys there that can take up the slack for a quarterback injury.”

When you study Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert, what have you seen him put on tape since he was with Jacksonville?
“I think he’s a quick decision maker. I think he throws an accurate ball. I think he can move. I think he’s fairly athletic. I think he’s a smart guy. We were out there, we practiced against him when we scrimmaged against San Francisco last year when Chip (Kelly) was there, saw some good things from Blaine (Gabbert). High draft pick. I know that he’s had some really good games in this league and so we need to be ready to go.”

What have you thought of the job T Chris Clark has done for you?
“Good. He’s done a good job. He’s worked hard. He’s a leader. He’s tried his best to stay fresh, stay healthy. He’s played a lot of snaps for us. He’s a veteran player, brings a lot of leadership to the position.”

When you study Cardinals Head Coach Bruce Arians’ career, what pops out to you the most?
“I just have a lot of respect for B.A. (Bruce Arians). I mean, he’s a great football coach. I’ve learned a lot from him, just from being around him at the owners’ meetings and combine and things like that. Definitely a guy that’s gone through a lot in his career. He’s made a lot of decisions based on his family. If you watch the ‘Football Life’ on him, that’s him. It’s a great show. Mike Devlin knows him real well because Mike Devlin’s dad recruited him to Virginia Tech. It’s a pretty interesting connection. So, Bruce is a great coach, all-time great coach in my opinion.”
