Houston Texans Transcripts (8/21)

Head Coach Bill O’Brien
QB Tom Savage
How was it to come back to Houston and practice in front of your fans?
“It’s great to be in front of our fans. We didn’t practice very well today though, so we have to pick it up tomorrow. But, it’s great to be back here in front of our fans. Our players need to get going though. Need to get going.”
What do you want to see them do better?
“Play better. Practice better.”
What did you think of CB Treston Decoud the other day?
“It was OK. It was OK.”
As far as your kicker competition goes, what are the things that you’re looking at when you’re evaluating?
“Making all the scoring kicks. PATs, the field goals, directional kicking, as far as kickoffs are concerned, hang time, consistency. Those types of things.”
Are you worried about having so many of your receivers missing practice?
Did the change in environment contribute to that?
“I don’t know. We have to practice better. We have to coach better. We have to practice better. We have to come out and we have to do a better job tomorrow.”
Do you have some thoughts on what ILB Dylan Cole has been able to do?
“He did a good job. He made a lot of plays. He was active. He’s a good, tough, young player.”
How much has RB D’Onta Foreman improved?
“He gets better. He’s a long way off, though. That’s the second preseason game. I know we got him getting measured for a bust in Canton, but I would say that he’s got a long way to go. I think he’s got a lot of talent but I think he’s got a long way to go.”
Is DE Jadeveon Clowney hurt?
I know football’s important but does anything else really matter when you have your daughter?
“No. Not at all. Not with this little girl.”
What’s your daughter’s name?
“Summer. Summer Rose.”
Summer, how do you think about the way your dad played Saturday night?
“She said, ‘Good, as long as he’s healthy.’”
How has your daughter, Summer, changed your life?
“Just puts everything in perspective. She’s the best little baby in the world and I just want to do everything for her.”
What did your performance against the Patriots mean to you?
“It was awesome. It was obviously her first game out there. Offensively, we did well and it was good to go out there and get a win with the guys and just execute and move the ball.”
How tough is it to do what you want to do when you have so many receivers out?
“We have a really talented group in that room and all the guys really stepped up and they made some plays and they did a good job.”
Do you kind of adjust in that situation?
“Those guys, they really had their nose in the books that week and they were getting ready. Obviously Bruce (Ellington) was there for 72 hours and he went in there and played well and he knew what he was doing. Obviously there’s the timing issue and stuff without guys being there, but we worked after practice and we got some stuff done.”
Have you ever thought about the fact that you can help the guys at the bottom of the roster?
“Yeah, it’s just about executing your job. I think if everyone does their job, they’ll put some good things on film and obviously you’ll get an opportunity to make the team.”
Can you imagine a quarterback-tandem scenario and how would that go down with you if that’s the way it went?
“I’m just here to do whatever I can to help out the team and I’ll let the coaches handle any type of packages that they want to work. I’ll be ready for this team no matter what.”
Head Coach Bill O’Brien was not happy with the work today. What did you see and what needs to get better?
“I just think we just got to start faster in practice. All those drives and stuff against our defense – obviously we’re used to going against the Patriots and now we kind of have to revert back to what we’re doing against our guys. It’s our first day back in Houston, so we can’t use that excuse. We just got to keep executing and do what we need to do.”
Did it feel like you were back in Houston?
“Yeah, it did. I was sweating this morning walking to my car at 5:30 a.m. It hits you.”
With all the fans out here supporting, did it help remind you why you’re playing?
“Yeah, absolutely. Even Saturday night, the stadium was packed. We have the best fan base in the NFL. It’s awesome coming out here playing in front of the fans and showing them what we got.”
