Houston Texans vs. New Orleans Saints Postgame Notes (8/20)

TEXANS TEAM NOTES

PRE-GAME NOTES
  • The following Texans players were captains for the game: ILB Brian Cushing, CB Johnathan Joseph, P Shane Lechler and QB Brock Osweiler
  • Houston won the toss and elected to receive to start the game
  • The following nine players did not play in the game: K Ka’imi Fairbairn, RB Alfred Blue, S Lonnie Ballentine, C Nick Martin, T Derek Newton, T Duane Brown, G Jeff Allen, DT Brandon Dunn and DE J.J. Watt
 
SCORING PLAYS
  • Started the preseason 2-0 for the sixth time in preseason history and the first time since the 2013 campaign
  • Have not allowed a touchdown since the first quarter of the Preseason Week 1 contest at San Francisco, marking a streak of seven consecutive quarters
  • Did not allow any points in four straight quarters from the third quarter of last week’s game at San Francisco through the second quarter of tonight’s game
  • Improved to 5-4 overall and 2-2 at home against the Saints in the preseason
  • Recorded three takeaways in the game: a fumble recovery on a punt return and two interceptions on defense. The Texans have registered five takeaways and a plus-three turnover margin in the first two preseason games
  • Did not allow the Saints to score on four red zone opportunities (0-for-4) and one goal-to-go chance (0-for-1) in the game
  • Posted 214 total net yards of offense (175 passing, 39 rushing) and 11 first downs in the first half
  • Held the Saints to 57 total net yards (34 passing, 23 rushing) and six first downs in the first half
  • Limited Saints QB Drew Brees to 5-of-8 passing for 29 yards, no touchdowns, one interception and a 29.7 passer rating on four total possessions

ILB MAX BULLOUGH
  • Contributed with a team-leading two special teams tackles and added another two tackles on defense
 
OLB JADEVEON CLOWNEY
  • Notched his first sack of the preseason and the team’s first of the game when he brought down Saints QB Drew Brees for a 14-yard loss in the second quarter
 
DE CHRISTIAN COVINGTON
  • Picked up his first sack of the preseason and the team’s second of the game when he tackled Saints QB Luke McCown for a 5-yard loss in the second quarter
  • Finished with three solo tackles, including two for a loss, one sack and two quarterback hits
 
ILB BRIAN CUSHING
  • Led the team with six tackles (four solo) and a pass defensed
 
ILB AKEEM DENT
  • Finished tied for second on the team with four tackles (two solo), including one for loss
 
S K.J. DILLON
  • Finished tied for second on the team with four solo tackles
 
WR WILL FULLER V
  • Caught his first touchdown of the preseason on a 19-yard pass from QB Brock Osweiler in the first quarter to give the Texans a 7-0 lead
  • Led the team with four receptions for 73 yards, including a long of 25 yards, and a touchdown
 
RB JONATHAN GRIMES
  • Recovered a fumble after ILB Brian Peters forced the ball out on a punt return by Saints RB/RS Marcus Murphy in the first quarter. Houston scored on the next drive
 
RB AKEEM HUNT
  • Returned two kickoffs for 57 yards (28.5 avg.), including a long of 31 yards
  • Led the team with six carries for 20 rushing yards, including a long run of 13 yards
 
CB JOHNATHAN JOSEPH
  • Recorded the team’s first interception of the preseason when he picked off Saints QB Drew Brees in the first quarter
 
P SHANE LECHLER
  • Punted six times for 264 yards, averaging 44.0 gross yards and 41.5 net yards per punt
  • Pinned two punts inside the 20-yard line and had a long punt of 54 yards
 
WR BRAXTON MILLER
  • Finished second on the team with three receptions for 34 yards
 
CB TERRANCE MITCHELL
  • Finished tied for second on the team with four tackles, including two solo stops, and one pass defensed
 
CB ROBERT NELSON
  • Picked off Saints QB Garrett Grayson in the end zone on the final play of the game to give the Texans their second interception of the day
  • Also had two solo tackles on defense and one on special teams
 
K NICK NOVAK
  • Made two 40-plus yard field goals (49 and 46), a 36-yard field goal and a PAT attempt for a total of 10 points in the game
 
QB BROCK OSWEILER
  • Threw his first touchdown pass of the preseason when he connected with WR Will Fuller V on a 19-yard score in the first quarter to give the Texans a 7-0 lead
  • Completed 12-of-19 pass attempts (63.2%) for 124 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a 77.5 passer rating on five total offensive possessions in the first half
 
ILB BRIAN PETERS
  • Forced a fumble on a punt return by Saints RB/RS Marcus Murphy in the first quarter. RB Jonathan Grimes recovered the ball on the play and the Texans scored on the next drive
 
QB TOM SAVAGE
  • Entered the game in the second quarter and on five offensive possessions, completed 7-of-12 passes (58.3%) for 75 yards and a 76.7 passer rating
 
WR JAELEN STRONG
  • Tied for second on the team with three receptions for a total of 25 yards
 
QB BRANDON WEEDEN
  • Entered the game in the fourth quarter and completed all four of his pass attempts for 54 yards and a 118.8 passer rating
