Houston Texans Transcripts (10/30): Head Coach Bill O’Brien

Houston Texans Transcripts
Friday, October 30, 2015
(Transcribed by Ryan Cantrell)

Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(on if DE J.J. Watt will have a normal workload on Sunday) “Yeah, he looked ready to go. So I would say the answer to that question would be yes.”

(on the status of G Brandon Brooks) “Yeah Brooks, he practiced, so yes it will be the same, the same answer as I gave for J.J. (Watt).”

(on T Derek Newton) “Same.”

(on if G Brandon Brooks, T Derek Newton and DE J.J. Watt are ready to go) “Yeah, I would say they are ready to go. If they come in tomorrow and it doesn’t feel right, then that’s tomorrow, but as we sit here today, again, I checked my degrees, I have an undergraduate degree from Brown University and not a medical degree. I just go by what I see.”

(on if he would ever like to become Dr. O’Brien) “No. That would be scary. I am just trying to be a better football coach.”

(on if he interjected anything new into this week’s practices and preparations) “Yeah, we did. We definitely did. I will tell you that we did, but I am not going to get into the details of what we did, but we definitely did some different things this week, both in our practice routine and in our schedule, schematically, all kinds of things, so let’s see if it works. The proof will be in the pudding on Sunday.”

(on getting to practice inside the stadium today) “I think the convenience of being able to do that is really good. To be able to, you know, if it’s bad weather out, of course we have a great bubble over there. No complaints about our practice facility at all but when you can go right out there on the turf and just practice, walk right out of the locker room, I think that’s very convenient and saves time. I think it was good.”

(on preparing for QB Zach Mettenberger) “Did a lot of work on Zach pre-draft. He’s a big guy, got a strong arm, smart guy, very football smart. He was coached well at LSU by Cam Cameron in his last year so he had a pro background coming into the NFL. He’s got a big arm and he will be a big challenge for us.”

(on how the Titans offense changes with QB Zach Mettenberger playing) “Well, obviously both quarterbacks have different skill sets, they can do different things. I mean you guys will be able to tell that just by watching their games on TV or whatever. There’s definitely things they do differently, I am not going to get into all of the details, but it would certainly not be exactly the same with this quarterback in there versus that other quarterback. You’d be able to tell that. I know you would.”

(on if it’s difficult preparing for two different quarterbacks who play very differently) “Yeah, absolutely. I mean they are different so you have to prepare for both guys because you are not sure who is going to play. One guy clearly can run, I mean can really run. The other guy is clearly a big drop-back passer with a cannon for an arm. Marcus (Mariota) has a good arm too, but they are two totally different quarterbacks. Yeah, that’s a good question and it is difficult, but I think we did a good job this week. Our guys practiced hard and it looks like we practiced well and we are going to go out there and play as hard as we can.”

(on the defense with CB Kareem Jackson out for the second week) “In this league, it really is the next man up. We don’t really dwell on those things. Of course, when guys get injured, we feel bad for those guys, but at the same time, the next guy has got to step up. That’s why those guys get paid and that’s just the way it is. That’s the way it is in this league. You only have 53 guys and 46 on game day. You got to have enough depth and we’re just expecting that those guys will go in there and play well.”

(on if he liked the way QB T.J. Yates came back and learned the offense this week) “I did. I was impressed with the way he came back and his recall, his ability to remember what we had taught him, you know, it was a while ago that he was here. He’s a good guy. He has a great demeanor about him, he’s a calm guy, he’s a smart guy and he’s good in the locker room so it was good to have him back.”
