QB Ryan Mallett

QB Ryan Mallett
(on how it feels to officially sign back with the team) “It feels good to know I’m going to be here. I wanted to be here. I am just ready to get started, ready for spring ball and ready for the summer.”

(on what the process was like) “I didn’t get involved too much. I was really working on my rehab and continuing to work. I let the guys that I hired to do the negotiating do all that stuff. To me, it really wasn’t anything.”

(on what it means to be returning to Houston) “That is one thing I told them, ‘Make sure—I want to be here at all costs if possible.’ That’s what we ended up doing.”

(on how his rehab is going) “It’s going well. It’s going well, still day-to-day, getting better every day.”

(on if he is ready to compete for a starting job with QB Brian Hoyer or whoever else) “I think you’ve always have to be. Our football team is based on competition. I don’t think the quarterback position should be treated any differently. I can’t wait to get out here with the guys and go to work and get going.”

(on if he listened to any other teams offers given he wanted to be in Houston) “My agents did. I didn’t. Like I said, I didn’t get involved in that. I was more worried about the football side of it.”

(on both Rick Smith and Bill O’Brien saying they wanted him back in Houston and made it a priority) “The feeling was mutual. I was glad to get it done as soon as we could so we could move past it and focus on football.”

(on if they gave him any assurances that the starting job was his to lose or anything) “No, it’s football. We’re going to compete and get ready to go.”

(on if he feels confident in his ability to be a starting quarterback for a playoff football team) “I have no doubt it my mind that I can be. I just have to go to work and stay healthy and do the right things day to day and be a NFL starting quarterback. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve got the chance to do it in a great city, so I’m excited.”

(on what percentage of health he’s currently at) “It’s just day-to-day. Day-to-day.”

(on why he wanted to be back in Houston) “The city, first of all. It’s a great city. I’ve known Coach O’Brien for a while. Last season was a great experience. I loved being a part of this team. I really wanted to be back.”

(on if he has a pretty good gauge of where he is and what he needs to work on) “Yeah, I’ve been doing this every day for the last 12-15 years, so I know where I’m at. I’m not worried about all that talk. I’m just ready to go play football.”

(on how much weight is off his shoulders knowing where he’s going to be next season) “It was good to get it done. I didn’t want it to linger around. I was ready to know where I was going to be so I could be around the guys, be around them daily and early.”

(on what about the Texans organization attracted him to it) “Just being a part of it last year, guys like J.J. (Watt), J. Joe (Johnathan Joseph), guys like that, they make it fun. I feel like we’re really building something here. We’ve got a lot to build upon and I want to be a part of it.”

(on wanting to continue to play for Bill O’Brien) “It’s nice to be able to say I’ve got the same head coach again this year and not have the third one in three years. I’m used to him. I know what he’s like. I know what he wants and so I’m going to go out there and do my best to put that on the field.”

(on how he feels he can get better through the offseason) “Just with the guys, coming in right at the beginning of the season last year was a little difficult because I wasn’t on the same page. I wasn’t here during camp. I think now, just being on the same page from the beginning is something that’s going to be beneficial.”
