HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have re-signed unrestricted free agents CB Kareem Jackson and T Derek Newton, it was announced today. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Jackson (5-10, 188) was drafted by the Texans 20th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. In his four seasons with the Texans, Jackson has started 71-of-74 games with 300 tackles (256 solo), 51 passes defensed, 10 interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
In 2014, Jackson saw action in 13 games, totaling 57 tackles (48 solo), nine passes defensed and tying for the team lead with three interceptions, including a career-high two interceptions in a Week 16 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Jackson was part of a defense that led the NFL with 34 takeaways, 22 of which came from the secondary.
Newton (6-6, 313) has appeared in 60 games with the Texans after being selected in the 7th round (214th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Arkansas State including starting the last 46 games he’s appeared in at right tackle. In his four NFL seasons, the Utica, Miss. native has blocked for three 1,000-yard rushers in his career.
